History of

The Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club

Lions Pledge

I pledge allegiance to my Country and to the cause of peace throughout the world. I believe in the principles of Lionism as contained in the Code of Ethics. I'm proud to be a Lion, dedicated to the Service of Others.

Lions Invocation

Where Lions meet be present Lord, To weld our hearts in one accord, To do thy will, Lord make us strong, To help the weak and right the wrong.

In the fall of 1972, a group of community-minded men were approached by members of the Dartmouth Lions Club to form a new organization in the Musquodoboit Valley. The need was there; the men were ready to meet the challenge and a brand new club calling itself the Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club was born. There were 22 charter members. The organization date was February 7, 1973 and the first Charter Night was held on March 17, 1973.

CURRENT OFFICERS                       PAST PRESIDENTS

Our achievements since our humble beginnings have been many and varied. One of our earliest projects was the equipping of playgrounds at the Elementary Schools in the Valley. Within just six months of our Club's formation, we had raised $35,000 to establish the Musquodoboit Valley Medical Centre. Within months of the establishment of this Centre, positive steps were taken towards the creation of a new modern hospital for the Musquodoboit Valley area. This was followed very shortly by the opening of the first drug store in the Valley.

During the first ten years of the Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club, over $80,000 was raised and redistributed through the Musquodoboit Valley area. In 1982, the Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club extended the family and service of Lionism by sponsoring the Musquodoboit Harbour and District Lions Club

Our Club has contributed many thousands of dollars to the schools in the form of bursaries, funding for school trips, funding for individual students to attend youth events and Safe Graduation. We sponsor Peace Poster and Drug Awareness programs. We have a large stock of home care and medical aid equipment available to loan free of charge on a first come-first served basis for those in need. These things have all been possible because we have received and continue to receive much support financially, morally, and spiritually from the people around us.

Ladies joined our club in 1996. As Lions, we attempt to alleviate need in our community. There have been many hours of service to the people and we have a genuine concern for the welfare of our fellow citizens in the Musquodoboit Valley. We are always mindful of our motto “We Serve”.

Lions membership is open to anyone 19 years of age and over. If you want to know more about our Club, please contact a local Club member.
