The
Power of 30
The number 30
comes up often in the Lions' fight against preventable
blindness.
-
Each
Lion can save the sight of 30 people with a CSFII donation
of US$180
-
There
are 30 members in the average Lions club
-
Every
30 seconds, six people go blind
-
Less
than 30 percent of all blindness is incurable, leaving more
than 70 percent of all blindness that Lions can reverse or
prevent
-
Lions
have established 30 WHO (World Health Organization)
childhood blindness clinics around the globe.
Campaign
SightFirst II is a coordinated, global fund-raising effort
involving all 1.35 million Lions in more than 45,000 clubs to
raise US$150 million for the Campaign SightFirst II program.
The World Health
Organization has estimated that the number of blind people in the
world could double in the next 25 years. To combat the leading
causes of blindness (glaucoma and diabetes) and assist in
preserving vision, the Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club is
participating in Campaign SightFirst II to heighten awareness and
education about sight preservation and preventable blindness.
In
Africa, there are an estimated 500,000 new cases of cataracts each
year, of which only one in ten is operated upon. In India, 80
percent of the blind suffer from cataracts, with more than 3.8
million new cases reported each year.
